Week Three: Funch With A Crunch

Funch is a Melbourne wholesome superfood business started by two Mums, with the aim to create something that is not only good for you, but tastes good and can be eaten by all. Whether it be in the lunchbox for kids, on-the-go snacks for busy parents or shared with friends around a cup of tea, Funch protein power balls and bars are for all those health nuts, gluten and dairy intolerant, vegans and everyone in between! The pre-prepared mixes are packed with all the essentials that you need for a hearty snack, as well as ensuring less work is spent making food, and more time is spent doing the things that you love.
I am super excited to announce that I will be partnering up with Funch for the next couple of weeks and showing you just how delicious their products are. Each week I will be making a flavour of their products, all of which you can buy online, as well as demonstrating how easily they fit onto all aspects of life!

Week Three: Funch With A Crunch

Hello readers!

This week I have tried something a little different to the Funch Protein Power Balls I’m sure you are all familiar with. I have the Funch Coconut, Choc & Chia Superfood Snack Bar to see how they weigh up against the other products in terms of convenience to make and of course, the taste!

This recipe requires butter and honey OR coconut oil and maple syrup if you want to keep the bars vegan/dairy free etc. The bars didn’t require any Dates so the process was actually rather quick; combining the melted butter and honey into the mixture. I used butter and both honey and maple syrup because I love the flavour of maple!

One consistent ingredient used by Funch in all of their snacks is chia seeds – and becoming increasingly popular in cooking today, I wanted to find out exactly why it was becoming such a common addition to smoothies, salads and desserts.

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from the plant Salvia Hispanica, which is related to the mint. In ancient times the Aztecs and Mayans considered chia seeds crucial to any diet, prizing them for their ability to provide sustainable energy… In fact, the word ‘chia’ actually translates to the Mayan word for ‘strength’! Today one of the key factors for its popularity is that is so rich in nutrients but low in calories.
Chia seeds contain a whole heap of good things that our bodies need daily including fibre, calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin B3, potassium, vitamin B1 and vitamin B2… The list goes on! Okay chia seeds, you have proved yourself worthy of the ‘superfood’ title.

As the bars were baking in the oven (For approximately 15 minutes in my fan forced oven) they smelt AM-AZ-ING! It was a delicious mixture of coconut, oats and dark chocolate chips that I believe made it better than your ordinary oat bar, which is generally loaded with refined sugars and flour. This pre-made mixture contains wholemeal flour and brown sugar, so you can eat awesome food without the guilt that usually follows. As I’ve always mentioned with Funch products, I love how they can be eaten in the day as a filling snack but can also be served at night time for a treat.

So, the result? I’m super frustrated with myself that I added less honey thinking the maple syrup would compensate, but it is SUPER important to put the correct amount of honey to ensure the bars STICK together! After being cooked golden brown and left to cool, my delicious Funch bars broke apart a little bit – but this was definitely my own fault! Regardless of its crunchy consistency, I still managed to eat all the crumbs, and it stayed together to take to work and to Uni but not as much as it probably should. I guess you live and learn!
